I’ve played about 400+ hours in The Binding of Isaac. And after so many hours of playing, I wondered if there was an opportunity to play this game with friends? To answer this question for myself, I went to the Wiki fan page for The Binding of Isaac. There I found some interesting information:
Co-op mode has been added to Rebirth. Co-op mode works, both in normal playthrough and in trials. A second player can join the game at any time by pressing the button Start on the second device (gamepad), the player will start the game as a random “Kid”, and will take one heart container from the first player. You can also return the container back if you press again Start. If the 2nd player dies, then the empty container will be returned back to the 1st player, and the second player can appear again, but as a different baby.

Both options for playing multiplayer have existed for a long time. The first option is quite interesting, but not as fun to play as the second option. I tested both, and I can say that both have disadvantages that, in my opinion, prevent you from enjoying the game with a friend.
One of the main disadvantages of the first option is that it will be possible to play it only when you have unlocked a baby companion on at least one character, which can be obtained by filling out the entire achievement sheet. Another downside is that you play as a baby, and not as a full-fledged character, which somehow breaks the feeling of the game.
The second option has a similar disadvantage with opening content, that is, in order to play as your favorite character, another player must have open. The second disadvantage is that you will not be able to join a friend’s game if, for example, there is a crash.
There is a third option to play multiplayer. And this is an online co-op for which the developer conducted beta testing in December 2023. I was one of the beta testers of this mode. This option is an improved version of the second, so, instead of choosing a character on the first floor, we select a character in a separate lobby for up to 4 players, where when you select a character, an achievements sheet appears under it, and achievements obtained in multiplayer are highlighted in blue. It is possible to join a game that has started, where players have not yet reached the Maw. Items have also been added that only work in co-op.
The third option also has disadvantages, such as bugs, inability to play Greed Mod, no mod support. But this is forgivable, since it was still a beta. The release of the third version will take place in November this year:
